Muscular dystrophy is a disease of the muscles which causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. In muscular dystrophy abnormal genes don't allow the proper production of proteins to form a healthy muscle. There is no cure for muscular dystrophy but there are medications and therapy available to slow the course of the disease. The most common symptom is progressive muscle weakness and depending on the type of muscular dystrophy symptoms may begin at different ages and muscle groups. One should immediately see a doctor when noticing signs of muscle weakness such increased clumsiness and falling. Muscular dystrophy is caused when a certain gene from involved in making proteins for healthy muscles is defective.
